For the most part, I don’t think it matters. Go with the one that you can get a better price per ounce.
for the extra premium, i’d buy the american silver eagles and canadian maple leafs.
you should get part or most of the premium back when you sell them, and if ever there were an emergency during which silver and gold became currency again, at least the ASE’s and the CML’s would already come with a sovereign guarantee. some future dealer or recipient may insist on assaying your private issue at your cost…
PS – ASE’s come with an official face value of US$1, while CML’s are C$5 a piece. whether these face values will matter in the future is anyone’s guess, if the price of silver is ever only one same price around the world, but for that reason i personally buy more CML’s when i can. also, at the metals dealer i go to, the premium differences between the private and gov’t issues are no more than $1-$1.50/ounce, so i don’t have any problem paying it…
We chose to buy American Liberty , Canadian Maple Leaf, Mexican Libertads and Englehard Prospector rounds, all in the one-ounce coins.
I would recommend sticking with the American and Canadian (maybe a few Mexican) minted coins. They will likely hold their value and are well-known; whereas silver bars are not as favored by dealers and collectors.
Also, in case of a return to the silver standard, the coins will be able to be used as currency.
